Hello, my name is Will and I’m a senior graduating this semester! I was born and raised in South Korea until 15 and I moved here in Georgia. South Korea has one of the best transportation systems in the world. Its transportation systems are so well-developed that you can go anywhere in Korea without a car. I know Americans can’t wait to be 16 to get their permits and try to drive their parents’ cars but Koreans used to get their driver licenses after college because they don’t feel they need them as early as Americans. In Korea, if you use transportation systems so often, they have something called “T-money,” which is like a debit card that works in any type of transportation systems so you don’t need to buy tickets every time you use transportation. Majority of Koreans bike as a part of recreation so it is hard to find bike roads besides public places but when I visited Korea last January, I saw more bike roads than the last time when I was in Korea so I guess Korea has been spending some effort to encourage bike culture.
This is where you can get the T-money or recharge it. You can find it everywhere inside any subway stations in Korea.
I haven’t been able to travel much before I joined the US Navy. While I was in the Navy, I had chance to stay in Chicago, San Diego, and Hawaii! I was assigned to station in Hawaii for 3 years, which I still believed I was pretty lucky. While I was in Hawaii, I found many people were using bikes to catch magnificent views from the nature of Hawaii. Hawaii doesn’t have bike roads separately instead, bikes are considered as automobiles, which means all bikes have to be registered. You can sometimes find a bike in the middle of roads between cars but not many often in Honolulu, which is the capital of the island. People usually use bikes outside of the city because that’s where the magnificent views are hidden and it’s relatively safe too because there aren’t many cars out there.
This is what a bicycle license looks like. Every bicycle in Hawaii has to be registered
I never actually took a picture of bikers so I just brought this from google but you will see tons of bikers in Hawaii
My goal for this course is as I have seen in Hawaii, I would like to see how the Netherlands encourages bike culture. I know they have infrastructure and environment that create perfect condition for people using bikes rather than automobiles. My other goal is how to implement the difference that I noticed from here in Atlanta and the Netherlands, particularly their infrastructure systems to develop a solution to encourage bike culture in Atlanta.
